ARE WE STILL IN 1983?

1983 saw Shagari Overthrown in a coup d’état, Buhari succeeded him. He was appointed Chairman of a new Supreme Military Council of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces by the junta. He ruled for two years and was overthrown in 1985 by Ibrahim Babangida.

What happened during the Military regime was; a military commander establishes a Government in a territory he had conquered. And in this territory, he administers the military law declared under military authority. This law applied to all persons in the conquered territory. This law also supersedes any incompatible local law. During the military regime, the rule of law made little or no sense. In 1983, the rule of law made no sense.

In 1983, the German reunification had not happened. The Unification of East and West Germany happened in 1990. In 2015, President Buhari in his G7 speech referred to Germany as West Germany.

Does President Buhari have a personal Time machine? Or he simply doesn’t understand what Democracy means? Or are we still in 1983?
